Dr Fuling Chen is a Research Fellow at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), The University of Western Australia. Dr Chen develops explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) and symbolic regression methods that turn complex data into transparent, interpretable models for clinicians and decision-makers. Dr Chen's current research, Integrative Symbolic Health Modelling, uses data from the Raine Study to model obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk across childhood and young adulthood, combining polygenic scores with maternal, early-life and familial factors. This work was recently published in the International Journal of Obesity (2026). Dr Chen completed a PhD at UWA on machine learning for voice analysis, received the Hyman S Spigl Prize in Advanced Engineering Mathematics, and also applies deep learning to local weather forecasting. Dr Chen has been a key investigator on over $1 million in research funding, supervises PhD and Honours students, and volunteers in primary school STEM outreach.
